We Do Not Inherit Sin

There is a popular doctrine that says all men inherit sin or a sin nature from Adam.  It is utterly false and anti-biblical.

The Bible says, “The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not bear the guilt of the father, nor the father bear the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself” (Eze. 18:20).  In other words, each individual is responsible and accountable only for his personal actions. This does not rule out our evil influence on one another, either through teaching or example (cf. Matt. 18:6-7).

The Spirit stated, “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in his body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad” (2 Cor. 5:10).  “Each one” is responsible for actions “he has done” in “his body.”  “Each one” is NOT responsible for the actions of Adam done in his body.

When Adam and Eve were created, God declared them “very good” (Gen. 1:31).  Through the enticement of Satan, they sinned.  Each of us are created good, and only become evil when we are lured into sin (Ecc. 7:29; Jas. 1:13-15). Therefore, we urge you to reject the doctrine of inherited depravity.

Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.
- Jude 3
