Killing God

Futile attempts have been made through the centuries to get rid of God. Some do it in subtle ways, by leaving God out of their lives, like the farmer fool (Lk. 12:16-21). Others make a bold assault on God, like the Rabshakeh (2 Kgs. 18:33-35).

Every effort has failed.

Still, there are men foolish enough to think they can kill God.

The latest assault on God, that is getting wide-spread attention, is a soon-to-be-released movie titled “The Golden Compass.” The flick is based on a children’s novel written by a God-hating atheist, Philip Pullman. Pullman has a trilogy of children’s fantasy books, the sole purpose of which is to attack religion in general and God specifically. According to Snopes.com, Pullman said in a 2003 interview, “My books are about killing God” (click here for snopes.com article).

Interestingly, both religious and atheists groups are criticizing the film. The movie is a watered-down version of the first book in the trilogy, “His Dark Materials.” It has removed the attacks on religion. Obviously, anti-God forces are upset because they want the full-blown assault on God and religion. The religious groups are up in arms because they see the movie as a subtle way to introduce children to the books, which they will unsuspectingly buy and then be treated to a wholesale trashing of God.

We do believe there is a danger in introducing children to Pullman and his poisonous preaching against God. It is one of the tools the devil uses to corrupt the minds of men, that is, seemingly innocuous things leading to outright sin. He is still the subtle serpent.

A larger issue is the media/entertainment industry at its basic anti-God/anti-religion stance. Immorality and irreverence are pushed in nearly every piece of material released. If it isn’t casual sex, it’s drinking. If it’s not vengeance, it’s homosexuality. If it isn’t one of those, it’s hate for religiously conservative believers in Jesus. Too, there is a decided anti-American theme—they are against the good things America is or stands for.

When are we as a society going to stand up against such filth and corruption? Let us do what we can by not supporting anti-God entertainment and also influencing our friends for the truth.

That which has been is what will be,
That which is done is what will be done,
and there is nothing new under the sun.

- Ecclesiastes 1:9
