Abortion Levels Lower…Not Really

A news headline said, “U.S. Abortion Total Hits Lowest Mark Since Year After Roe v. Wade.” The article stated there were 839,226 abortions in 2004 (year of latest figures). It went on to say that California totals were not included and that 12-20 percent of the nation’s abortions are not in the totals. So, the news is no news; there is not an accurate count on the number of abortions in the U.S.

Read the article here.

Though there is no real news here, it does give us opportunity to revisit a subject with tremendous spiritual, moral, and social implications.

That there are more than 800,000 abortions in our “Christian” nation is appalling. One would be too many. Yet, since 1973 murdering the unborn has been legal. This is a subject that touches a nerve we me for several reasons.

It personally affects me because I am adopted. I was born in December 1969, about four years before abortion was legalized. All I know about the birth mother is that she was 15 years old. Though I do not know for sure, it slightly haunts me that if it had been four years later, a 15-year-old girl and her parents might have chosen an abortion over giving me up for adoption.

As a citizen of this nation I look at abortion as a national tragedy. Millions of little babies have been murdered in their mother’s womb, with her consent, by doctors and nurses who supposedly are duty-bound to preserve life; to do no harm. This iniquity has had an impact on our society. Life is cheap. If you do not believe that then watch the nightly news with all the murders and “missing persons.” Children abuse and kill one another at school and elsewhere. Some do not think twice about killing their parents or a stranger.

Who can tell if one of the aborted babies might have discovered a treatment or cure for cancer? What if one of them would have become a great political leader to help improve our government and society? Likewise, we will never know if one of the aborted babies might have sparked a spiritual revival in our land.

Spiritually it is easy to see the tragedy of abortion. Those involved are murderers (Ex. 21:20-25). The Bible makes no distinction between a baby in the womb and one out of it (Lk. 1:44; 2:12). The taking of such a life is a fundamental violation of loving your neighbor (Matt. 22:39). The guilty will burn in hell forever for what they have done (Rev. 21:8). And, again, their influence on others through the cheapening of life is far-reaching. It breeds a general lack of appreciation and affection for fellow man. It instills selfishness unlike any other behavior; act in your own personal selfish interests regardless of what you must do to another person including the defenseless and innocent (cf. Phil. 2:1-8).

The only silver lining in it all is that the millions of souls are safe before God. They passed into the hadean world free of the guilt of sin. They will be in heaven.

Though our nation is supposed to be advanced and enlightened, it is barbaric when it comes to its treatment of the unborn. The most helpless and dependent in our society are not afforded protection by the law. They are treated as mere body tissue with no more rights than a tumor. Will it ever change? Will we let our voices be heard? Will those of us who still believe in the sanctity of life speak up and persuade our friends and neighbors? Will we oppose the professors who speak from “on high”? Friend, stand up for God’s creation.

To everything there is a season,
A time for every purpose under heaven.
