Creationism On The Move

Twenty years ago, when I was in elementary school, the accepted explanation for the universe was evolution.  We were taught there was another ice age coming (my daughter is being taught we are now in danger of extinction because of global warming).  There was no doubt that the earth was hundreds of millions of years old with man being only a recent development from monkeys.

Now evolution is not just the accepted explanation of the universe, it is the only position that a rational, intelligent being can take or face ridicule and denunciation.  Evidence of this abounds if you simply talk to college students, watch TV, or read any main-stream news articles.  However, there are some now speaking up against the norm.

Lee Strobel was once an atheists and in the course of investigation and research, changed his convictions and now believes in God as the Creator.  He has written several popular books on this and related issues.

A debated is scheduled to take place on October 3, 2007 between a prominent atheist, Richard Dawkins, and John Lennox who is described as a “Christian apologist.”  They will meet in Birmingham, AL to discuss the question “Does God Exist?”  This will not be the first such debate, but it ought to draw some media attention because Dawkins is the author of The New York Times bestseller The God Delusion (read article).  Whether or not the press coverage will be fair is another question.  We have no doubt much of what is reported with favor Dawkins since the press is overwhelmingly liberal.

Another, more interesting event will take place next year.  Ben Stein, a well-known and well-liked actor, financial guru, and lawyer, is set to release a movie in February 2008.  The title is Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed.  It is about how scientists who dare say intelligent design is possible (not even probable) are being ostracized by the scientific community and institutions (including the Smithsonian).  It appears like it will be a good movie (read article).

We need to keep our faith in the Word of God and let our voices be heard; in the classroom, our communities, among our friends, and at work.  God created the universe and I am not ashamed of it no matter who laughs or what they do.

To everything there is a season,
A time for every purpose under heaven.
