Jesus and Baseball

The Christian Post reported that people are taking Jesus to the ball park.

Mixing America’s favorite pastime with the Church, Faith Nights is drawing thousands of baseball and Jesus fans to stadiums nationwide.

On Sunday, it's the Los Angeles Dodgers vs. the Colorado Rockies at Dodger Stadium and popular Christian pop punk band Hawk Nelson is on deck.

What began with minor league teams has spread prominently into the major leagues, complete with player testimonials, in an outreach that has involved hundreds of churches and attracted larger crowds to the games. (Full Article Here).

Just another example of the social gospel.

These types of events show that people have lost their faith in the Word of God and its power (Rom. 1:16).  They no longer believe the truth can attract people to the Lord.  Rather, they believe, the gospel needs to be repackaged with entertainment and fun events.  The message of the cross is unappealing to the world, but baseball isn’t.  So, tie baseball to Jesus, and shazam!  people are “converting” in droves.

If Jesus were on earth today, do you think He would stand on the pitcher’s mound and wave His hands while the “Christian pop punk band Hawk Nelson” plays?

The social gospel in all its forms—whether the night at the ball park, a pizza and skating party, or whatever—cheapens the religion of Christ.

Christianity is a sober, serious religion.  It is not a hobby.  It is a cause to which men and women are called to devote their lives; their souls (Matt. 11:28-30; Rom. 12:1, 2).  On it rides their eternal destiny.  Somehow, baseball and punk bands do not fit into this picture.

To everything there is a season,
A time for every purpose under heaven.
